Exposed aggregate is a decorative concrete that is stylish, durable and easy maintenance. To achieve this look aggregate such as natural rock or tiles is added to the concrete before it is poured. Once set, to expose the aggregate the surface layer of cement is washed away to uncover the mixed in aggregate. Because of its durability and skid resistance, an exposed aggregate finish is ideal for most flatwork including:
- Sidewalks
- Driveways
- Patios
- Pool Decks
An exposed-aggregate finish is also possible on concrete walls or tilt-up panels. Vertical applications include:
- Decorative retaining walls
- Architectural building facades
- Sound barrier wall
- Pressure Washer
- Sealers and rollers
If you’re looking at maintaining your exposed aggregate talk to the team at Perth Hire.
Honed concrete is like exposed aggregate, but the difference is a smoother matt finish.
Being highly durable, strong and extremely low maintenance compared to exposed concrete, honed Concrete offers more desirable traits like being smooth and extremely child-friendly underfoot – a joy to walk and play on.
Honed Concrete is essentially the first two stages of polished concrete with several additional steps added to the application.
After laying the decorative concrete mix, the concrete needs to set for some time. Once set you will need to use the latest and most advanced grinding machines, to remove the top layer of concrete to expose the decorative stone aggregates within the mix.
Once a satisfactory level of honed appearance is achieved, you will need to acid wash, high pressure clean and seal your Honed Concrete as a complete package to provide you with many years of maintenance free enjoyment.
Honed Concrete is that perfect product for alfresco’s, patio’s, and pool surrounds, giving you that ideal surface for an indoor/outdoor lifestyle.

Polished concrete is an elegant and durable look that can be obtained by polishing a concrete surface with abrasive pads until a glossy surface is achieved.
The benefits of a polished concrete floor are many including:
- It is considered a form of sustainable design flooring, as it utilises material that has already been placed.
- It is low-maintenance, more durable and easier to clean than other flooring options available.
- Polished concrete is easily maintained with the use of clean water or a neutral balance PH cleaner. There are also many cleaners designed for the proper maintenance of polished concrete available.
- It is considered a non-slip application.
- Polished concrete reduces dust mite and allergen problems and does not support mould growth.
- It is hard wearing and will not chip or dent like softer surfaces such as timber and tiles.
- If taken care of the application will last a lifetime
To obtain a polished concrete application you will first need to grind and polish your concrete until it reaches the desired look. From here a process known as hardening occurs, where the use of a penetrate chemical known as a hardener penetrates the concrete, creating a chemical reaction to help harden and dust proof the surface. During concrete polishing, the surface is processed through a series of steps (in general a minimum of 6 grinding steps are completed for it to be considered polished concrete) utilising progressively finer diamond grinding tools.
At Perth Hire, we only supply the most innovative products and equipment for your polished concrete application. We supply the best concrete polishing pads and grinding heads from premium brands, and our team are constantly up-to-date with the latest industry techniques and technologies. With our range of hire equipment, you can create stunning polished floors with our high-speed grinders/polishers in no time.

The time it takes to polish concrete depends on many factors. These include everything from how big the area is, how open the space is, or if there small rooms that will require hand work. It can also depends on how much exposure stone you would like t to see and level of shine you are hoping to achieve for your applicaiton
As an example, a typical double garage for a grind and seal usually takes 2-3 days to complete. For a house that has approximately 100m2 you’ll need to allow 5-6 days until it is ready to be walked on.
This will depend on what procedure you have done. Grind and seals will need to be resealed every 2-10 years depending on the quality of sealer you have selected. If you leave your application to long without resurfacing, you will need to have the floor re-grinded and sealed again. For mechanically polished concrete, you can just reapply the protective sealer every ten years.
As a general rule, the concrete should be cured for 28 days before you start the polishing process.
